Dean’s Welcome

Dean Myers

from Gary Myers, Dean and Earl F. Nelson Professor of Law

Welcome to the website for the University of Missouri School of Law. I want to share with you some of the things that make this law school unique.

Collegiality. First and foremost, this is a collegial place. Our faculty and staff have their doors open and are welcoming to students. Students who come to Mizzou Law form lifelong bonds with their classmates, as well as with their faculty mentors. Our entering class size is around 120 students, resulting in a tight-knit student body and closer interaction among faculty and students than is common at larger law schools.

An Excellent Legal Education. We offer an excellent academic program designed to train practice-ready lawyers. Mizzou Law has a wide selection of courses taught by our expert faculty and adjunct professors who are skilled and recognized in their fields. We also offer a wide range of clinics, externships with government and public service organizations, and skills courses that enable our graduates to excel in their fields. The quality of our program is confirmed by our outstanding bar passage rates and by our career placement rates. Our alumni include leading law firm partners, business executives, judges, and federal and state government leaders.

Expert Faculty. Our faculty consists of nationally- and internationally-known experts in their fields. If you take a few minutes to review our faculty pages, you will find people with experience in a wide array of subject areas, from intellectual property, to business and tax, to criminal law. We have an outstanding Center for the Study of Dispute Resolution, as well as joint degree programs and an array of interdisciplinary opportunities.

Affordability. Our tuition has always offered an outstanding value for our students, with costs below those of private law schools and many public law schools. Nearly 60 percent of our students receive scholarships to defray the cost of tuition. Our graduates have the benefit of completing their legal educations with lower than average debt loads, enabling them more freedom in selecting the career path that works for them.

A College City. We are located in Columbia – a city large enough to offer many of the amenities found in metropolitan areas, but small enough to have a low cost of living, safe communities and a very high quality of life. Columbia offers a wide array of cultural, dining and entertainment options, as well as incredible recreational facilities both on campus and off, including great trails for hiking, walking or cycling.

A Great Network. Our graduates practice law throughout Missouri and in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, as well as in a number of foreign nations. These lawyers, judges and government leaders offer a tremendous network of mentors and potential employers in every field of law. What I often hear from alumni is that they received an education here that was second to none, and they are always looking for more recent graduates who have the benefit of this great legal education.

I invite you to explore the pages of the website and to contact the Office of Admissions for more information, a tour of the law school or for answers to any other questions you might have. Let us show you Mizzou!

Best regards,

Gary Myers
