Hi everyone! I’m so excited that you are looking into law school at the University of Missouri! My name is Tanya Horvath and I’m a 2L this year. Since I’m originally from Chicago, everyone always wonders why I would leave there and come to Missouri for a few years. Well, my undergraduate studies were great but I decided to stay in Missouri to pursue my law studies because the University of Missouri offers such a wide range of programs for those of us who don’t want just one degree. I’m a dual degree student, pursuing both a Juris Doctorate here at the law school and a Masters of Public Affairs at the Truman School of Public Affairs just down the street. This is a four year, collaborative program between the two schools allowing a candidate to spend a full year studying public affairs, a full year studying law, and the remaining two years studying the programs jointly. If I pursued both degrees separately, it would take a total of five years! The staff at both schools work really well together to ensure that all of the students take the classes they need and still graduate in four years. There are also lots of other dual degree programs to fit whatever goal students desire.

The law school itself is consistently ranked highly throughout the nation and the classes are challenging yet rewarding. In searching for the “right” school during my junior and senior year of undergrad, I was looking for a smaller program where I could feel like students and professors really knew me and I wasn’t getting lost in a large crowd. The law school is just the right size to offer many opportunities for friendships and involvement while also allowing most professors to learn names relatively quickly. In addition to the great amenities at the law school like convenient lockers and study carrels, MU itself offers tons of options for working out, eating out, and generally having a great time with your friends. The Rec Center is state of the art and I love going to Tiger X classes during the week. Brady Commons offers tons of food options so you don’t have to bring a lunch every day and who can beat Missouri football these days? The games are a great time to hang out with classmates outside of school and cheer on the Tigers!

If you have any questions about anything, please feel free to email me at tmhkc3@mizzou.edu. I’d be happy to answer any questions, law related or not!
