On Friday, September 30th, there will be an informational meeting for the 2011-2012 Arbitration Team. Please come at 1PM to learn about the structure of the team, the process of joining and the practice/tournament schedule.
The Arbitration team consistently qualifies for and places among the top teams at the national championship tournament.
1Ls, 2Ls and 3Ls are welcome to attend and are eligible to compete on the team. In a VERY BRIEF nutshell, the arbitration competition is similar to a trial – there are two attorneys and two witnesses per side. Attorneys will give openings and closings, direct and cross witnesses and present arguments to advance their client’s interests. The major differences include a panel of judges evaluate the proceedings, as opposed to a presiding judge and jury and that the rules of evidence are considerably relaxed.
Those who enjoy persuasive presentations, excel at oral advocacy or have an interest in ADR are encouraged to attend. Please note that you do not need previous arbitration experience for this competition. Also, BOA does NOT host a school wide tournament – thus, once you’re selected for the team, you automatically qualify to attend the regional tournament.
Returning members will cover the arbitration process and answer your questions at the meeting.
We look forward to seeing you there!
