Client Counseling Competition

  The 2015 Client Counseling competition will be held from October 12-14. If you are interested in participating, please sign up outside of the BOA office. Even if you do not have a partner, sign up individually and BOA will pair you with someone. The competition is limited to the first 15 teams that sign up.   Some things about the Competition: · It’s the LAST competition of the semester!! · It’s very easy and requires little to no prep work. · A great way to earn BOA points. · If you play the role of the client, you get free dinner! The Client Counseling Competition simulates the moment a potential client walks into your law firm and has a legal problem for you to address. This competition requires no legal knowledge in a certain area. Two-member teams of students acting as attorneys interview the client and provide a preliminary assessment of the client’s case. BOA is in need of volunteers to play the role of clients and bailiffs (BOA points included). Students interested in volunteering as either a client or bailiff can sign up outside the BOA office. Congratulations to the Client Counseling Winners!

The Client Counseling Competition simulates an initial legal consultation between two attorneys and a prospective client. Two-member teams of students acting as attorneys interview the client and provide a preliminary assessment of the client’s case. The assessment explains the attorneys’ understanding of the client’s legal position and provides the client with possible courses of action. This competition provides students an opportunity to fine-tune communication and interpersonal skills essential to establishing a rapport with clients. It is vital competitors learn to develop this rapport so as attorneys they can obtain the information required for effectively analyze a client’s issues. The competition is open to all law students. Mizzou Law BOA Hosts 2014 ABA Regional Client Counseling Competition

The Board of Advocates (BOA) at the University of Missouri School of Law hosted the Midwest Regional 2014 ABA Client Counseling Competition on Saturday, February 8.  Teams of law students around the Midwest tested their interviewing and counseling skills in rounds simulating the initial client interview at a law firm. Heath Martin & Kelly Postlewait from the University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Law won the Regional Competition, earning a spot in the National Finals taking place March 21-22 in Norman, Ok.
