Intra-School Mock Trial Competition

The Board of Advocates is excited to announce its annual Intra-School Mock Trial Competition! We will be hosting an informational meeting on Monday, February 8 at 1 pm in room 6. The actual competition will take place February 22nd – 25th. This is the last all-school competition BOA will host. Teams will consist of four (4) members. No more than two (2) of those members can be a member that has competed in the past on either Mizzou Law’s competitive trial teams (Thurgood, TYLA, Labor and Employment, or AG’s Cup) or arbitration team. If your team has limited experience, you have the option to be assigned a 3L who will serve as mentor/coach. If you do not have a team in mind, you can sign up as an individual and will be placed with other individuals who are also looking for a team to join. Sign-ups will be posted today, February 1st outside the BOA office. Make sure you denote whether you opt in for a mentor/coach or not. Space is limited as we only have room for 12 teams. The problem is a criminal case and can be found attached to this email. Questions can be answered either by emailing BOA directly, or at the info meeting. Find the case here:...

Congratulations to the 2014 Transactional Law Competition Winners!!

The Board of Advocates and the Tax Law Society, at the University of Missouri School of Law, created the Transactional Law Competition to provide students an opportunity to develop transactional law skills through practical experience. Teams competing in the Transactional Law competition consist of either two or three students who work cooperatively to resolve a transactional law “problem.” The problem has been adapted from a real life fact pattern.  Each team creates a proposal before the competition that they believe best handles the issues in the problem and present that proposal to the judges during the competition. This year’s Transactional Law competition was a huge success thanks to BOA’s collaboration with TLS and the willingness of attorneys and students to volunteer their time to help with the event. The Board of Advocates and the Tax & Transactional Law Society congratulate the winners of the 2014 Transactional Law Competition:Winners:Angela Kennedy, Cory Lee, & Ryan UlrichRunners-Up:Sarah Crawford, Michael Donnel, & Bekah Keller Check out some photographs from of the event...

Congratulations to the 2014 Negotiation Competition Winners!

Congratulations to the 2014 Negotiation Competition Winners!

The Negotiation Competition is an alternative dispute resolution (ADR) competition between two teams based on a fictional fact pattern. Each team consists of  two students, both acting as attorneys. The teams are given general information describing the problem. Each team also receives confidential information providing additional details about their client’s interests and needs for reaching an agreement. Based on the general and confidential information, each team advocates to resolve the dispute in the manner most favorable to the client, while still focusing on a mutually beneficial resolution. Teams are neither required to reach an agreement, nor are they penalized for not reaching an agreement; instead the competition focuses on the process of the negotiation and how each team handles the situation. Judges and attorneys evaluate how teams utilize ADR skills and work cooperatively to address their client’s interests. The negotiation competition is an invaluable learning experience for law students.  The competition could not happen without help from local attorneys serving as judges or students volunteering as bailiffs — The Board of Advocates and competitors truly appreciate all of those who made this competition possible. The Board of Advocates congratulates the winners of the 2014 Negotiation Competition:   Winner: Kyle Olmstead & Jenna Homeyer   Runner-Up: Jared Logan & Phil Thornton ***Pictures of the event will be posted in the upcoming...
