The required text is Melvin I. Urofsky & Paul Finkelman, A March of Liberty: A Constitutional History of the United States, volume I only (Oxford University Press 3d ed. 2011) (“UF”). The Supplement is Documents in American Legal History to 1876, which is available on the TWEN page for this course.

For the first class session, please read pages 1-17 in the supplement, and scan the Table of Contents for chapters 1-21 in UF. Begin reading UF 1-8.

Be prepared to discuss this question:

“Why should law students and lawyers study American legal history?” (In other words, “Why are you taking this course?”)
