Most legal employers are reputable and reliable, but the Career Development Office is not in a position to guarantee the professional standing of individual law firms, attorneys, companies or other employers posting position notices.   • 5/15/08: The Hawthorn Foundation, a non-partisan, non-profit organization focused on supporting economic development in Missouri through various initiatives, is seeking a part-time Executive Director to manage administrative matters related to foundation operations and to assist with development activities. Minimum qualifications include a Bachelor's degree, outstanding verbal and written communication skills, exceptional attention to detail, and experience in the practice of economic development or the formulation of economic development public policy. It is expected that this position will require 10- 20 hours of service per week, although some weeks will require full-time service. Salary range is $40,000-60,000, dependent upon experience.   • 4/23/08: The Missouri Coalition for the Environment seeks a Law and Policy Coordinator (LPC). Outstanding candidates will have a passion for a clean environment and an understanding of the legal structures that support and encourage environmental stewardship. The chief responsibility of the LPC is working with Coalition staff to build and implement an effective strategy for achieving the Coalition's issue and policy goals, with a marked emphasis on the Coalition's clean water program. The specific project areas of LPC include: 1) Legal: LPC is responsible for identifying and investigating situations that may require legal intervention at the administrative or judicial level. In this capacity, LPC strategically develops legal campaigns to advance environmental protection. LPC also serves as legal counsel to the organization and will consult with the Board of Directors and staff as needed. LPC also supervises legal interns working on MCE projects; 2) Advocacy, Regulation & Enforcement: LPC works with Coalition staff to insure that the Coalition is represented at and participates in relevant monitoring and oversight committees at the state and federal level (e.g. the Clean Water Commission, stakeholder work groups, etc.). LPC will work with Coalition staff to develop and manage an agency enforcement oversight program to insure that appropriate state agencies are enforcing existing state and federal environmental protection laws. LPC will oversee tracking, monitoring and timely review and response to agency public comment notices; 3) Legislative: LPC works with Coalition staff and consultants to follow the progress of bills affecting the environment. LPC may help research and draft legislation which furthers Coalition policy initiatives. LPC will be available to attend committee hearings, prepare briefings, and give testimony as requested by the Executive Director; 4) Education: LPC works with Coalition staff, the Board of Directors, and the Policy Committee to identify and research issues of environmental concern, and to develop and propose Coalition positions on issues. LPC, individually and with aforementioned entities, develops issue and position papers and information publications for distribution to the membership and the general public. At the direction of the Executive Director, LPC may also write op-ed pieces, letters to the editor, and news releases. LPC may also appear at radio or television events or otherwise act as a media contact, as directed by the Executive Director; 5) Other Responsibilities: LPC is expected to take a leadership role in developing relationships and alliances with other organizations, agencies and constituencies - and key staff members or leaders of such groups - whose activities and interests are pertinent to the Coalition's policy priorities; LPC works with and serves as a technical resource for the Volunteer/Membership Coordinator on the development and execution of issue advocacy campaigns. LPC is also a technical staff resource for members and coordinates that work with Coalition staff; LPC supports Coalition fundraising through a cooperative effort with the Executive Director to identify and develop grant proposals, collaborating on the development of fundraising and membership letters, preparing updates for major donors, and participating in major donor solicitation and other fundraising/outreach events. Applicants must be members of the Missouri Bar and have experience with administrative law, civil litigation, and environmental law. The preferred candidate will have familiarity with the Clean Water Act, experience working in collaborative efforts with teams of legal and technical experts, and excellent communication skills.
