  • 5/12/08: The United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit seeks a Staff Attorney. This position is located in the Clerk’s Office, Operations Division and reports to the Legal Coordinator. The Clerk’s Office supports the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, which includes Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and the United States Virgin Islands. This is a 2- to 5-year term, with the possibility of permanent appointment. The position is in Philadelphia. Duties and Responsibilities: The incumbent assists and advises the Court on the administration of the Rules of Attorney Disciplinary Enforcement and the Rules for Judicial Conduct and Disciplinary Disability Proceedings; conducts legal research and prepares procedural orders assisting in the disposition of proceedings before the Court; and prepares memoranda for the Court in emergency matters. The Office of the Federal Defender operates under authority of the Criminal Justice Act, U.S.C. sec. 3006A, to provide defense services in federal criminal cases and related matters in the federal courts.   • 5/6/08: The Governor of the State of Iowa is seeking candidates for the position of State Public Defender. The State Public Defender’s Office coordinates legal representation to indigent clients who are accused of committing crimes or involved in juvenile court matters. The State Public Defender's Office supervises a Trial Division of 18 field offices, an Appellant Defender Office that handles indigent defense cases on appeal for the entire state, and a Civil Commitment Unit. In addition, the State Public Defender administers an assigned counsel and organizational contract program, which includes fee claim review and approval. The Office also provides legal advice to inmates at the Iowa State Penitentiary in civil cases.   • 5/1/08: The University of Iowa College of Law seeks applications for a full-time Director of Academic Support beginning with the 2008-09 academic year. The College of Law is an intimate, collegial and dynamic professional community located in an affordable university town with vibrant range of academic and cultural endeavors. The Director of Academic Support will administer and advance the current Academic Achievement Program which principally supports first-year-law students as they develop legal reading, study and test-taking skills. Position Summary: Emory Law School seeks a Clinic director with significant experience in child welfare and juvenile justice policy development and client representation, teaching and student supervision, and management and fundraising. Specific Duties and Responsibilities: The clinic director oversees the operations of the clinic, including supervising faculty and staff working in the Clinic, developing curriculum, teaching students in a classroom setting, supervising students in a clinical setting, participating in local, state, and national policy development, fundraising for Clinic operations, managing and implementing grant awards, and managing the Clinic budget. As the lead faculty member of the Clinic, the Director develops the curriculum and accompanying syllabus for the classroom seminar on child abuse and neglect and the public policy and legislative clinical offerings, teaches a weekly seminar class, and leads one clinic student meeting a week. The Clinic Director supervises the Clinic staff which includes three attorney positions, a postgraduate fellow in law, and two part-time administrative support positions. The Director also personally supervises clinic students in the performance of their duties. The Clinic Director is expected to develop relationships with organizations and individuals in Atlanta, Georgia, and nationally that work on matters closely related to the Clinic’s mission. The Director, in coordination with law school and university development staff, is required to raise sufficient funds for the Clinic budget, the sources for which include major and minor donor solicitation and grant applications. The Director, as a member of the law school faculty, will also be expected to perform regular faculty duties including participation in faculty meetings, participation on faculty committees, support for law school recruitment efforts as well as outreach to the law school and broader legal communities through participation in conferences and panels. Counselor. Statement of the Job and Key Responsibilities: The Career Development Office (CDO) provides career-related advice and counseling for the JD Program's nearly 900 students, LLMs, and the entire Boalt Hall alumni community.   • 3/5/08: The Federal Public Defender - Southern District of Texas, has a temporary opening for a Criminal Defense Trial Attorney. The office of the Federal Public Defender is a criminal defense law firm; the Federal Public Defender is responsible for representing individuals charged with a federal crime if a federal judge or magistrate judge determines that the accused person is financially unable to obtain adequate representation and if the judge or magistrate judge assigns the case to the Federal Public Defender. Usually, the Federal Public Defender is appointed at the initial appearance before the magistrate judge. An appointment made by a magistrate judge remains in effect for any proceeding on that case in district court; if the defendant appeals, the appointment continues in effect for representation on appeal, through the United States Supreme Court. Most appeals are handled by the Houston Office.   • 3/3/08: The Harvard Law School is soliciting applications for the position of Visiting Assistant Professor beginning with the 2008-2009 academic year. The School seeks applicants with substantial legal practice experience -- a minimum of 3 years of experience in government, non-profit, or private practice, not including time spent as a law clerk -- who have a strong interest in an academic career, but who have not yet completed enough scholarly work to make a regular tenure-track appointment possible. Appointments will be for a term of 2 years. Each appointee will teach a regular course load and will be expected to produce one or more substantial pieces of scholarship. During the second year of the appointment, he or she will likely enter the tenure-track teaching market. Each Visiting Assistant Professor will have access to the full range of resources offered by Harvard University. He or she will be provided a private office, library privileges, health benefits, a research budget, a budget for travel, and an annual salary of $125,000. The Assistant Director of Career Services aids the Director of Career Services in the production, management, and evaluation of the programming aspects of a comprehensive career service program for students and alumni of the law school. Responsibilities of the position include: actively assisting and participating in office long-range planning; counseling students and alumni; implementing new programming including one-on-one and group training; planning and executing on-campus interviewing and resume solicitation programs; developing and maintaining contact with employers nationwide to encourage program participation and to cultivate job opportunities; oversight of the office's job posting system and databases; supervision and upkeep of the resource library; producing written materials for Career Services newsletters and promotions. A Juris Doctorate degree and strong knowledge of legal markets is required. The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal, organizational, oral presentation and writing skills. In addition, the ability to work independently and effectively as a team, an excellent sense of humor, and an enthusiasm for working with law students, lawyers and the legal community is required. Experience in a law school career services office, knowledge of self assessment tools and legal career paths, and counseling experience is strongly preferred.
