Mission

Most law students want to know "Will I find a job?" The short answer is "Yes, you can." The mission of the Office of Career Development is to guide you through your career path choices and job search with the hope that you will not just find a job, but that you will find a professional opportunity that is right for you. We serve as a resource for you not just while you are a student, but throughout your entire career.

The primary goal of the Office of Career Development is to assist law students and law alumni to obtain meaningful employment. We do this by helping them to explore and clarify career interests, strengths and goals; enhance their understanding of the legal employment marketplace; to assess options; to identify resources and information regarding current or potential job openings; and to communicate with employers.

The process ideally takes place in small, manageable steps over three years. We will help you through what can seem like an overwhelming task. Just ask!

Employment Assistance

To help formulate and execute an effective job search strategy, we assist in many ways.
  • We facilitate communication with employers and alumni. Our office initiates contact with employers through outreach visits and correspondence. We post job listings and provide job newsletters for students and alumni. We maintain a network of alumni willing to hold informational interviews with students.
  • We provide individual advising to all MU law students and alumni. We suggest or review career plans and help formulate an effective individualized strategy for locating employment best suited to the career needs of our students and alumni.
  • We sponsor career-related workshops and panel presentations. Recent programs included topics such as resume and interview tips, Career Information Fairs, Kimm Walton's "Guerilla Tactics..." seminar, orientation to on-campus interviewing, and non-traditional careers panels.
  • We maintain a Career Resources Library and web pages. Library holdings include employer directories, occupational information on most facets of legal employment, and numerous free handouts related to job search skills. Our web pages include password-protected Job Listings, judicial clerkship application tips and open links to legal career development information.
  • We conduct an On-Campus Interviewing Program (OCI). We offer OCI in the fall for 2L's and 3L's, and in the spring for 1L's and 3L's. Seventy-five to eighty legal employers interview on campus annually for FT and summer employment. We sponsor the MU Campus Workforce Recruitment Program for College Students with Disabilities and participate in the St. Louis Minority Clerkship Program with three other law schools.
  • We support Off-Campus Interview Programs as follows: National Association of Public Interest Law (NAPIL) Career Fair in Washington, D.C.; Patent Law Interview Program at Loyola University-Chicago; Midwest Public Interest Career Fair, Chicago, IL; Cyber Law Recruitment Conference, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH; The Heart of America Career Fair, UMKC; and The Gateway to Careers Job Fair, UMSL.
