Student Programs

Most law students want to know "Will I find a job?" The short answer is "Yes, you can!" The mission of the Office of Career Development is to help guide you through your career path choices and job search with the hope that you will not just find a job, but that you will find a professional opportunity that is right for you. We serve as a resource for you not just while you are a student, but throughout your entire career. We invite you to take advantage of the following services:

  • First Year Orientation to Career Services
All first year students are welcome to visit the our office at any time, and to participate in Career Programming throughout the year. Special programs just for 1Ls will be held during the first week of November, and we look forward to working individually with you to develop your cover letters and resumes after that time.
  • Individual Counseling
We are here to assist each of you with questions and concerns about the job search process. We encourage each student to visit our office often and early in your law school career.
  • Professional Development Programming
We present career and professional development programs throughout the school year. Topics include resumes and cover letters, interviewing skills, job search techniques, career options and professionalism in the workplace, and other topics relating to your career development. We also host two career information fairs to provide you with the opportunity to meet with practitioners and learn what they do and the career path they took to get there.
  • Job Postings and Announcements
We maintain current job postings for summer and year-round clerkships, attorney positions, judicial clerkships, governmental and public sector positions, academic positions, both on the web and on the bulletin board outside our office in Room 103. Additionally, we maintain subscriptions to publications that list thousands of nationwide position announcements.
  • Job Fairs
We register for several job fairs, allowing students to participate in interviews with firms located throughout the Midwest Region and nationwide.
  • On Campus Interviews
We schedule interviews with employers throughout the school year with law firms, corporations, government agencies and public interest groups. Each year, approximately 75-80 potential employers visit campus to interview students. During the fall semester, 2Ls and 3Ls participate in this interviewing process with a variety of legal employers, including regional and national law firms and government agencies. First year students do not interview with any employer until after December 1. First year students are eligible to participate in on campus interviewing during the spring semester. You should be aware that only a very small percentage of 1Ls will find a summer job through on campus recruiting. Even if you participate in on campus interviews, do not limit your search to this process. Although all types of employers are invited and are welcome to interview on campus, many smaller employers (the ones who hire most of our students) may not have the resources to interview on campus, and should be contacted directly.
  • Reciprocity
Students and alumni who want to work in a state other than Missouri may take advantage of some of the services offered by other law schools by requesting a "Letter of Reciprocity" from this office. Stop by and talk with Assistant Dean Tamra Wilson Setser or Andrea Mazza Follett if you are interested in an out-of-state job search.
  • Externships
Externships allow students to work under the supervision of a judge or an attorney in a public law office, government agency or not-for-profit organization. Externship opportunities are available during the fall, spring and summer semesters for either two or three hours of school credit.
