This week at the Law School, in honor of National Pro Bono Week we will host a speaker, Latricia Adams, from Legal Aid of Western Missouri (LAWMO) on Wednesday, October 17th at 1:00 in Room 3. Ms. Adams will talk about the Volunteer Attorney Program.
Federally-funded legal services programs provide representation in civil cases to those with little or no income. As federal funds continue to shrink, legal services have turned to attorneys in the private sector to meet the needs of their clients. Legal Aid of Western Missouri (LAWMO), with the support of the bar association, created the Volunteer Attorney Project (VAP). The project coordinates private attorneys willing to donate their time and experience to assist those in need. Come hear Ms. Adams talk about the program in honor of Mizzou Law’s Pro Bono Month. Career Component credit is available and lunch is provided. Please RSVP through Symplicity.
On Friday, October 19th, the Career Development Office will be driving interested students to St. Louis to attend the Missouri Bar Annual Meeting and Judicial Conference. The conference is heavily attended by local attorneys and the judiciary, and is a fantastic networking opportunity for students interested in practicing in St. Louis. Students will leave at 9:30 am, and arrive back by 7:00 pm. The day will include lunch with alums at the Mizzou Law Alumni Luncheon and attendance of the New Lawyer Practice Management Seminar, where you will hear practitioners speak about “What Every Lawyer Must Know About the Criminal Justice System,” “Laying a Solid Foundation for Handling Domestic Matters in Missouri,” and “Ethical Dilemmas and Situations Faced by Lawyers in the Early Years of Practice.” RSVP under the “Events” tab in Symplicity — if there are no longer spots available, contact Jennifer McGarr in Room 103 for potential carpooling opportunities.
