This week at Mizzou Law, the Career Development Office will sponsor the first “Life of a Lawyer” so far this fall.  These events are conducted in an intimate setting and provide an opportunity to learn about different practice areas by getting to know an alum.   Andrew Bach, a 2005 graduate and a partner with Ahern and Bach, LLC, will be on campus Monday, September 23rd at 1:00 to 1:50 in room 107.  The firm has offices in both Ashland and Edina, Missouri.  Andrew focuses his practice primarily in insurance defense, civil litigation, municipal law, school law, business law and estates and trusts.  Attendance is limited to twelve students and lunch will be provided.  Be sure to RSVP through Symplicity.

Have you considered a career with the Military?  If so, come hear about the US Navy Judge Advocate General (JAG) Program also on Monday, September 23rd at 1:00 to 1:50 in the Courtroom. Lt. Chao Pan will be on campus for an Informational Session.  Interested students should attend to learn more about summer and post-graduation employment opportunities with the Navy. Maybe public service with state government is something you have considered.  If so, you won’t want to miss this event on Wednesday, September 25th. Come hear about legal jobs with the State of Missouri at “The People’s Lawyer:  State Employer Panel,”  1:00 to 1:50 in the Courtroom. A panel consisting of attorneys from various state agencies will talk about their jobs and how they practice law within their agencies. Agencies that will be represented include:

  • MO Department of Higher Education
  • MO Public Service Commission
  • Missouri Office of Administration
  • Missouri Department of Insurance, Financial Institutions and Professional Registration
  • Missouri State Auditor’s Office

On Monday, September 30, please join us to hear Missouri Supreme Court Justice Paul Wilson, our guest speaker to kick off Pro Bono Month!   Judge Wilson graduated from Mizzou Law in 1992.  As a law student, Judge Wilson interned for Judge Edward D. “Chip” Robertson on the Supreme Court of Missouri, and Judge Pasco Bowman on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit. Upon graduation, Judge Wilson served as a full-time law clerk for then-Chief Justice Robertson and Judge Richard F. Suhrheinrich on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Judge Wilson then moved to New York City to join the law firm Sullivan & Cromwell as an associate in the firm’s litigation practice.

In 1996, Judge Wilson returned to Missouri to work in the state attorney general’s office, where he spent 12 years in a variety of positions of increasing responsibility, culminating as deputy chief of staff for litigation. During his tenure, he represented the State of Missouri in numerous criminal and civil matters in trial and appellate courts around the state and across the country. He has argued dozens of cases in Missouri’s Court of Appeals and Supreme Court, as well as in the United States Supreme Court. In 2002, Judge Wilson was recognized by the National Association of Attorneys General as one of the outstanding state attorneys in the country. On January 16, 2010, Judge Wilson was appointed Circuit Judge in the 19th Judicial Circuit (Cole County).

Throughout his career, Judge Wilson has been very involved in his community. Among the positions he has proudly held, he served on the board of directors for Mid-Missouri Legal Services and as counsel to the board of directors for a regional child advocacy center.  Don’t miss this opportunity to hear Judge Wilson speak in the Courtroom from 1:00 to 1:50!
