“Witches Be Crazy” Focuses on Salem Witch Trial Accusations

October 10th, 2014

Mizzou Law’s Historical and Theatrical Trial Society recently presented “Witches be Crazy,” an unscripted, unrehearsed trial, at the Missouri Theatre. The trial, covered by the Columbia Missourian and the Columbia Daily Tribune, focused on Thomas Putnam, who had a major role in leveling accusations against others during the Salem Witch Trials. Putnam, played by Professor Frank O. Bowman, was found not guilty during the mock trial.

The trial included 13 students and three professors from the School of Law. Professor Ben Trachtenberg and student Kristen Shively Johnson played the roles of Putnam’s defense counsel, and Professor Chuck Henson and student Andrew Crane played the roles of the prosecution, the newspapers reported. U.S. District Judge Nanette Laughrey, ’75, served as the judge for the mock trial.
