Mizzou Law Professors Called Upon to Shed Light on Darren Wilson Grand Jury Proceedings

Professor Ben Trachtenberg and Professor Frank Bowman were quoted in various news sources over the past week after the announcement that the grand jury hearing evidence in the case of Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson and the August 9 shooting of Michael Brown would not indict Wilson on any counts.

Professor Trachtenberg was quoted in an article from FiveThirtyEight.com and a piece from USA Today article about the history of grand jury indictments of police officers, as well as a Think Progress piece about some of the criticism surrounding St. Louis County Prosecutor Robert McCulloch’s press conference after the grand jury decision. Professor Trachtenberg was quoted in a New York Daily News piece as well as a broadcast on Canada’s CTV that discussed the questions surrounding McCulloch’s legal approach to the case.

Professor Trachtenberg was also quoted in an article from Ozy about the relationship between Ferguson and Biden’s Law, or the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act, as well as a federal investigation into whether the Ferguson Police Department “engage(s) in a pattern of racial discrimination,” according to the article.

Professor Frank Bowman was quoted in a U.S. News and World Report article about the possibility of a federal prosecution of Wilson. He also discussed the grand jury decision in an article from the New Republic.

Professor Trachtenberg also commented on the federal investigation and possible future legal actions for KRCG-TV 13, as well as on the options that Michael Brown’s family has to file a lawsuit for an article from The Guardian.
