The University of Missouri School of Law is the winner of the 2015 Missouri Attorney General’s Cup Trial Competition. The team consisted of 3Ls Kayla Jackson-Williams, Derrick Spencer, Cody Holt and Joel Ritchie; 2L Tamar Hodges; and 1L Cory Garr.

Announced by Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster, ’91, in 2010, the Attorney General’s Cup is a mock trial competition among Missouri’s four law schools — University of Missouri, University of Missouri-Kansas City, Washington University and St. Louis University.

The competition included eight teams, two from each school, and took place in Jefferson City at the Federal Court House and the Supreme Court of Missouri. Judging the competition were practicing trial attorneys. There were two rounds each day in the two-day competition.

“In the championship round,” said Spencer, “Joel Ritchie and I competed against a very talented team from Washington University. Their trial advocacy program has quite a reputation, so it was very cool to win against them.”

Ryan Redmond, a Boone County prosecutor and Emily Ottenson, a Missouri assistant attorney general, coached the Mizzou Law team. Associate Dean Chuck Henson provided additional coaching as well. According to Garr, “The coaches are volunteers, so to say we are indebted to them is an understatement. From presiding over our scrimmages to working with us individually, they made the difference.”

Jackson-Williams said, “By participating in the Attorney General’s cup, I’ve been able to further develop my advocacy skills and work on my courtroom demeanor and presence. As a future litigator, these are both invaluable traits to have.”

“This experience has tremendously helped my legal education,” Hodges said, “because it has allowed me to perfect my craft of trial advocacy. I have not yet taken Trial Practice or Evidence, so this competition allowed me a chance to learn the concepts and principles of both.”

The AG’s cup returns to the Mizzou Law for the first time since 2011.
