Professor Amy Schmitz was named to a steering committee for an American Bar Association (ABA) Enterprise Fund Award Program, “Expanding Access to Legal Services Through the Advancement of Court-Annexed Online Dispute Resolution (ODR).”
This project seeks to create a platform to implement ODR in New York in order to resolve cases involving both unrepresented and represented litigants and to lower the overall caseloads of judges. The pilot program will focus on consumer debt cases. The goal of the project is to create an efficient, court-administered platform that uses structured online communications in conjunction with the services of volunteers, including certified mediators, which can potentially resolve these matters in a fraction of the time and at a significantly lower cost with better outcomes for the parties.
The ABA hopes to assist with the project and to create checklists and measures to assist other courts that may want to duplicate these efforts.
