Mizzou Law Student Chosen for National Fellowship, Scholarship

Second-year Mizzou Law student Samantha Groark was recently chosen as a 2017 Fellow through the Peggy Browning Fund Fellowship Program. This summer she will spend 10 weeks working as a law clerk at Hammond & Shinners, P.C., a St. Louis firm specializing in labor and employee benefits law. As a fellow, she will be working to advance the cause of workers’ rights as well as participating in other activities throughout the year.

According to the fellowship program, “We work closely with law schools, leading labor attorneys, professors and mentors at selected organizations to ensure that our fellows are offered unique and challenging work experiences. While the fellows gain practical skills, the mentor organizations and their clients benefit from the services provided by this talented and committed group. Given our strong reputation with participating law schools, together with solid working relationships with labor law professors at these schools, we are able to recruit the best and the brightest!”

Groark was also selected as one of five 2017 recipients of the Michael Weiner Scholarship for Labor Studies from the Major League Baseball Players Association. She was awarded a $10,000 scholarship from the Players Trust.

According to the association, eligible students must have “a superior academic record, a demonstrable commitment to the labor movement, a strong recommendation from an academic or a labor/workers’ rights practitioner, and excellent written and oral communication skills.”

Following the announcement of the scholarship, Groark was profiled on the association’s website in “Curt Flood’s Legacy Helped Inspire 2017 Michael Weiner Scholarship Winner.”

“I chose to attend law school in order to practice labor law,” Groark says. “Mizzou Law has given me every opportunity to succeed in pursuing this goal. I’m especially grateful to Dean Bob Bailey and Professor Rafael Gely for their excellent teaching and caring mentoring.”
