My name is Phelan A. Simpkins and I am currently a 1L here at Mizzou Law. I was born and raised in “the Windy City”, Chicago, IL. I attended Mizzou as an undergraduate where I received a Bachelor’s of Science in Biochemistry. After I graduated in 2016, I went on to work for Mizzou’s Office of Admissions as the South Chicago Regional Representative. This was a great opportunity because it gave me a chance to not only return to my hometown, but also work with underrepresented students to show them they can go beyond high school and Chicago. It was in those two years I found that I had a passion and genuine interest in law and its inner workings.

I chose to come back home to Mizzou Law in large part because of the people. Since law was not my original goal I was going through the application process alone, and applied to many different schools. Out of all the ones I was accepted to Mizzou was the only one to reach out on several different occasions with personal messages; even my acceptance letter was tailored to the information I provided in my application. As much as I wanted to fight it, at the end of the day, I knew there was no place like home. I guess this makes me the face of what it means to be “Mizzou Made”.

Quick tidbit: I am a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and interested in criminal, civil rights, and education law.

I’m excited for your journey so please contact me with any questions you may have!
