Biographical Information
Professor Smith has a long history of exploring and protecting technology.
In 1998, she became a 1998 Visiting Law Fellow at St. Hilda’s College of Oxford University, spending the trinity term of 1998 in Oxford. In 1998 she was also selected as a Visiting Fellow at Durham University (England). Professor Smith teaches Property Law, Introduction to Intellectual Property, Patent Law & Policy, and Computer & Cyberspace Law. In 2000, Professor Smith was selected as a Fulbright Lecturer. She was hosted by Renmin (People’s) University of China in Beijing, China. At Renmin University, she is teaching Chinese students U.S. Intellectual Property Law, Patent Law, Software Law, and Cyberspace Law. In the Fall of 2001, she will join the law faculty of the University of Missouri-Columbia as part of an interdisciplinary E-commerce Initiative.
Professor Smith’s scholarship is multifaceted and interdisciplinary. She is, of course, an intellectual property and cyberspace scholar. Additionally, her scholarship centers around recognizing and redressing barriers for white women and people of color, especially Black children, regardless of whether the barriers are economic barriers, technological barriers, or educational barriers. While in China, Professor Smith has had the honor of traveling around China and the Asian region, giving presentations and workshops on intellectual property, E-Commerce, Cyberspace, and race and gender in technology.
She has traveled to
extensively in China, as well as to Sri Lanka, The Philippines, India, Japan, Macao, and Hong Kong, sharing information about exploring and protecting technology.
