April 12th, 2018

Professor Ben Trachtenberg spoke on March 19 at The George Washington University’s School of Public Policy & Public Administration, presenting on his research related to racial disparities in college and university student discipline.

How University Title IX Enforcement and Other Discipline Processes (Probably) Discriminate Against Minority Students” appears at 18 Nevada Law Journal 107 (Fall 2017). The article discusses how unlike elementary and secondary schools, which carefully track demographic data related to student discipline, most colleges and universities keep no such information. It also describes how several aspects of the university disciplinary apparatus — including broad and vague definitions of offenses, limited access to legal counsel, and irregular procedures — increase the risk that minority students will suffer disproportionate suspensions and other punishment.
