Professor Halabi Presents Research at World Health Organization Meeting in Geneva

June 21st, 2018

On June 12, Professor Sam Halabi presented his research on the use of material transfer agreements for access and benefit sharing at a meeting convened by the World Health Organization in Geneva.  The meeting on the use of access and benefit sharing to promote public health included representatives from ministries of health in Africa, Asia, and South America in addition to representatives from international organizations to identify trends and practices with respect to sharing human pathogens in exchange for identifiable benefits and agreed upon terms of access.  Access and benefit sharing is increasingly required by resource poor but biodiverse rich countries that are generally unable to afford the high prices charged for new medicines and vaccines that result from research in Europe and North America.

The proceedings of the meeting will inform a longer white paper by the World Health Organization to inform deliberations in international bodies including the United Nations and the Convention on Biological Diversity.
