October 25th, 2018

Professor Doug Abrams recently spoke to a town-hall-style symposium that explored lifelong consequences that can arise from misuse of Facebook, Twitter, and other social media by high school athletes and other students. The symposium was held at Montclair State University in Montclair, N.J.

Prof. Abrams and four other panel members discussed publicized incidents of high school students’ racist,  sexist, or vulgar social media postings that were later found by employers, undergraduate or graduate admissions staffs, collegiate athletic recruiters and coaches, or other members of the general public. The panelists also explored the legal rights of students who post, and examined the roles of parents, teachers, and coaches to educate students about inappropriate social media postings.

The symposium was presented by Investors Foundation in association with the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) and Montclair State’s School of Communication and Media.
