Law Day Awards

At this ceremony, we honor some of the most outstanding individuals who have distinguished this law school – and the legal profession – by their careers and their many accomplishments.

  • The Citation of Merit is the highest alumni award bestowed by the School of Law. With this award, we recognize the accomplishments and service that the recipients have performed for the legal profession, their communities and the law school.
  • The Distinguished Recent Graduate Award is presented to an outstanding alumnus who has graduated within the past 10 years.
  • The law school annually recognizes an individual who is not a graduate of the school but who has distinguished him or herself within the legal profession, including legal education, with the Distinguished Non-alumnus Award.
  • The Judge L.F. Cottey Award is given to a 2L student who has excelled in written and oral advocacy.
Judge Cottey served the people of Missouri in the profession of law from his graduation from the School of Law in 1931 to 1979, when he retired after serving 17 years as a circuit judge of the First Judicial Circuit of the State of Missouri. Judge Cottey was a contributor to state bar educational publications and was a panelist at legal seminars. He regularly held moot court for the students of the School of Law. He was a speaker at district bar meetings across the northern half of Missouri and in 1980 delivered the commencement address at the School of Law hooding ceremony. Judge Cottey was a dedicated professional with broad knowledge and skills in all areas of the law. He was recognized particularly by his peers as possessing a flair for written and oral advocacy. The judge felt that this acquired talent was enhanced by a comprehensive working knowledge of fine writing and history. The family and friends of Judge Cottey established an endowment to fund this award in his honor.
  • The Husch Blackwell Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award was established in 1980 by alumni and friends in the Kansas City firm bearing its name and is presented each year to the full-time faculty member who, during the preceding 12 months, established a record of distinguished achievement in teaching. The recipient of this award is selected by the dean upon advice and recommendation of the Missouri Law Review editorial board.
  • The Shook, Hardy & Bacon LLP Excellence in Research Award was established in 1993 by alumni and friends in the Kansas City firm bearing its name and is presented each year to the full-time faculty member who demonstrates excellence in research based on a published article from the preceding year. The recipient of the award is selected by the dean upon the advice and recommendation of a committee consisting of School of Law faculty and members of the firm of Shook, Hardy & Bacon LLP.
  • The Loyd E. Roberts Memorial Prize in the Administration of Justice was established in 1979 by the family and friends of Loyd E. Roberts to honor the MU law professor or student who has made the most significant contribution to improving the administration of justice, either within Missouri, nationally or internationally, during the preceding year.
  • The University of Missouri Chapter of the Order of the Coif has been in existence since 1906. Of the 204 law schools accredited by the American Bar Association, only 86 have been granted chapters of the Order of the Coif. We are quite proud of this distinction. The law school is allowed each year to induct a graduate as an honorary member. The Coif inductee is a person who has distinguished themselves within the profession, within the community, and on behalf of their alma mater.
  • The law school is also proud to have a chapter of the Order of Barristers. This, too, is a select national organization, and it honors outstanding law student and alumni advocates. At MU, it is our students themselves who – through the Board of Advocates – run our advocacy competitions, and they do a splendid job of this across many local, regional, and national competitions. We recognize one graduate each year who serves as an honorary inductee into the Order of Barristers. This individual exemplifies the art and skill of advocacy for students every day in their own practice.

Judge L.F. Cottey Advocacy Award
2L Jack Gilkey

Jack Gilkey, a second-year law student, is from Lamar, Missouri. He graduated from Mizzou with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering. He has volunteered extensively in his time at the law school. In addition to juggling classes and volunteer opportunities, he also serves as a Law School Ambassador, teaching assistant for Legal Research and Writing, Note and Comment Editor for the Missouri Law Review, and member of the National Moot Court team.
Gilkey shared these thoughts on receiving the Judge L.F. Cottey Advocacy Award: For me, this award serves as a reminder that advocacy is the highest calling, and greatest responsibility, of being a lawyer. In fact, advocacy was what drew me to the legal profession. While I thoroughly enjoyed my chemical engineering education, it did not take me long to learn that even the most technical of disciplines face issues and challenges within the legal landscape. My passion lies in helping individuals navigate the legal system’s rules and nuances.
To paraphrase Blackstone, a right is nothing without a remedy. I think of advocacy as the role attorneys play in establishing those rights and obtaining their remedies. Judge Cottey always emphasized that the skills lawyers employ when advocating for their clients are just as important as the skills in analyzing the legal issue. He never wavered from these principles, and he lived life as an extraordinary advocate. I only hope I can, someday, live up to the example set by the man behind the award.
