2015 Faculty Colloquium Series: Jennifer Cooper & Dr. Jennifer Fellabaum

Recorded on March 6th, 2015

As part of the Spring 2015 Colloquium Series, the CSDR welcomes Jennifer Cooper, Visiting Professor at Seattle University School of Law and Dr. Jennifer Fellabaum, Assistant Teaching Professor at the University of Missouri College of Education on a cross cross-disciplinary panel presentation on learning theory, evidence based learning skills, and developing effective learning environments for legal education.

Dr. Fellabaum will begin the panel presentation by introducing fundamental concepts of adult learning theory, the literature on signature pedagogies, the debate over learning styles, as well as outcome assessments in education. Professor Fellabaum will discuss the overall importance of being intentional in developing effective learning environments and strategies. Professor Jennifer Cooper’s presentation will summarize her working paper entitled “Illusions of Competence: Using Empirical Research on Undergraduate Study Behaviors to Better Understand & Teach Law Students.” Professor Cooper will discuss undergraduate research on effective learning strategies as well as students’ continued reliance on ineffective and improvised “common sense” strategies, resulting in “illusions of competence” in their skills and understanding. Professor Cooper will examine whether these same learning strategies are effective for law students. Professor Cooper will discuss her development of a “Law Student Study Habits Survey,” in partnership with Dr. Regan A.R. Gurung of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, to learn which learning strategies are most effective for law students. Finally, Professor Cooper will identify concrete ways that legal educators can incorporate research findings about effective learning strategies into the law school learning environment. Kate Gallen (Class of 2013) and Kristen Johnson (Class 2015) will also participate on the panel and offer a recent graduate/student response to Professor Fellabaum & Professor Cooper’s presentations.
