The Honorable Mr. Justice John L. Murray is currently Chancellor of the University of Limerick and is a former Chief Justice of Ireland. Prior to that, he was, for eight years, a judge at the Court of Justice of the European Union (Luxembourg). He is also a former Attorney General of Ireland and Visiting Professor at the Université de Louvain. Mr. Justice Murray is Chairman of the Consultative Panel for the appointment of judges to the European Court of Human Rights (Strasbourg).
Prior to accepting public office, he was in private practice for over twenty years as a leading barrister of the Bar of Ireland, before national and international courts. He has delivered papers or lectured at universities throughout Europe and the United States and at numerous international conferences. He has received honorary doctorates from Wake Forest University, New England School of Law, and the University of Limerick. He is the holder of the Order of Merit, with Grand Cross, from the Grand Duke of Luxembourg. He is also a former Attorney General
