Despite the colder weather this weekend, Mizzou Law’s 19th Tim Heinsz Race was a resounding success, raising $63,390 for the Tim Heinsz Scholarship Fund— a record in the history of the event.
The atmosphere was lively as students, faculty, alumni and community members gathered at the starting line just outside of Hulston Hall. They were joined by Truman the Tiger, a face painter, and a pancake catering company all the way from St. Louis.
“Being able to come back as an alumna is just fantastic,” Julia Rives, ‘16, said. “The scholarship that this race funds was my scholarship [as a student.] It really means a lot to me to be able to come here and give back.”
Since its inception in 2004, the race has been expanded to not only honor the memory of former Dean Heinsz but former Associate Dean Jim Devine as well.
For members of the Devine family, the race is particularly important.
“It’s a great thing to be able to be here and honor his memory and be with the folks that he loved,” Circuit Judge Josh Devine, ‘07, said. “Anytime I get the chance to come back it’s just truly a wonderful experience.”
Behind the scenes, the race’s four co-chairs have been hard at work to plan the event.
“The students literally do everything,” Assistant Dean Emeritus Bob Bailey said. “It takes a lot of time and effort, and they do it graciously. It wouldn’t happen without their hard work.”
“We’ve also had a lot of help in the law school community,” co-chair Betsy Smith said. “We have a lot of 1L and 2L volunteers, [and] 3Ls on the committee that are super helpful. It’s definitely a big group effort.”
Race, cycling and dog walking events all went smoothly, and over 181 people participated. Mizzou Law is proud to continue its tradition of honoring departed faculty while bringing people together and supporting students’ legal education.
