The Child and Family Justice Clinic is a newly reinstated clinic at the University of Missouri School of Law that provides free legal assistance in matters involving domestic relations. The Clinic assists individuals in the legal services of: obtaining orders of protection, child custody matters, divorce proceedings, adoption proceedings, and other services related to domestic relations and family violence.

The Clinic is directed by faculty attorney Professor Danielle Dodd, who supervises Rule 13 certified 2nd and 3rd year law students. Under Professor Dodd’s supervision, students engage  and assist in all aspects of a client’s representation, from providing advice and counseling, to appearing in court on the client’s behalf.

Who we serve

The Child and Family Justice Clinic is free, and does not charge clients for its services. However, the Clinic will not cover any court fees or costs. Currently, the Clinic represents individuals residing in Boone County, Missouri.

The Child and Family Justice Clinic represents low income individuals who are unable to afford a private attorney. In accordance with the U.S. Federal Poverty Guidelines.

Information for Students

The Child and Family Justice Clinic is a 4-hour credit clinic that consist of four (4) experiential credits. Students in the Child and Family Justice Clinic will work under the supervision of the Clinic Director, with Rule 13 certification. Students will participate in both simulated and real court cases.

Students will have the opportunity to engage in all aspects of a case. Under the Clinic Director’s supervision, students will draft legal documents, interview clients, and research legal matters. Additionally, students will attend and appear on the record at all court hearings and trials, in matters such as, an order of protection hearing, or a child custody hearing.

The Child and Family Justice Clinic recognizes that providing meaningful language access is a critical function of ensuring safety and security for all clients. As such, the Child and Family Justice Clinic will provide trained and competent interpreters, whenever oral communication is needed. This service will be provided at no charge. The Child and Family Justice Clinic will never turn anyone away because they do not speak English.
