Housing heroes: New program to support veterans experiencing homelessness

Contact: Courtney Perrett, 573-882-6217, cperrett@missouri.edu Since 2009, the number of veterans experiencing homelessness across the United States has shrunk by more than 50%, according to a 2022 Department of Housing report. With the support of a $150,000 grant from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), the University of Missouri School of Law Veterans Clinic is aiming to continue this trend here at home with a new program designed to further empower veterans in taking steps out of homelessness. The Veterans Outreach Program will help attorneys connect with veterans experiencing homelessness with the goal of offering them the legal…

Mizzou Law Celebrates Successful Partnership with the Missouri AGO

As a part of Mizzou Law’s commitment to the Missouri Method, which features experiential hands-on learning, the school hosts clinics for students interested in veterans law, entrepreneurship, and the recently announced reopening of the family violence clinic. However, due to the high demand for those limited-capacity clinics as well as an existing student interest in public sector law, not all students could enroll in the existing clinics. To fill that gap, Mizzou Law launched a new practicum course last spring with the Missouri Attorney General’s Office (AGO). The practicum connects law students with a variety of professional interests with…

New state funding allows Mizzou Law to reopen Family Violence Clinic

Contact: Courtney Perrett, 573-882-6217, cperrett@missouri.edu When it opened in the early ‘90s, the Family Violence Clinic at the University of Missouri School of Law was among the first of its kind: a safe haven for indigent victims of violence and a place for law students to gain the practical experience essential to a successful career as an attorney. Now, after  closing its doors in 2020, the legal clinic is poised for a comeback with support from new funding passed by the Missouri legislature. “I am so excited about this clinic,” said Paul Litton, dean of the MU School…

Faculty Spotlight — Meet Dean Sandra Sperino

A first generation undergraduate and law student, Sandra Sperino applied to law school not quite sure of what her life would look like as a lawyer, or where her career in the legal field would take her. Though Sperino, now an associate dean and Elwood L. Thomas Missouri Endowed Professor at Mizzou Law, spent a brief period working in journalism and public relations after college, she was looking to take on something more intellectual. “I was looking for an academic challenge,” Sperino said. “I just knew that law school was hard and rigorous and a good course of study. So,…

Professor Dennis Crouch cited in Washington Post article

Dennis Crouch, an associate professor of law and director of the Center for Intellectual Property and Entrepreneurship at the University of Missouri School of Law, was cited this week in an article in the Washington Post. The article references Professor Crouch’s 2022 study of Federal Circuit patent decisions statistically showing what was already common knowledge – that the outcome often depend upon which judges are on the panel.  The study was published on Professor Crouch’s renowned patent blog, Patently-O last May. The Washington Post article discusses the ongoing controversy between Judge Pauline Newman and Chief Judge Kimberly Moore. Professor Crouch’s…
