Shruti Rana is the associate provost for academic programs and professor of law at the University of Missouri. In her role in the Provost’s office, Rana oversees policies and processes related to academic programs, including academic program reviews, new degree program proposals, alternative digital credentials (ADCs), and mentoring, leadership, and faculty development and support programs for academic units across campus. She serves as Academic Affairs Liaison to the UM system, liaison to Faculty Council Academic Affairs Committee, and is the Provost’s Office contact for HLC/College/Unit level accreditation activities and international academic program agreements. Rana is the Provost’s delegate for faculty misconduct, academic grievance, and equity resolution processes, and conflicts of interest and commitment. She also supports academic units by providing expertise, research, and resources for faculty education, development, research and scholarship, and external awards, and developing strategic initiatives for academic programs across campus. Rana supervises the Provost’s Office external awards team, the conflict of interest and commitment office and the Faculty Fellow for Academic Programs.
Specific duties that she fulfills include:
Prior to serving as Associate Provost for Academic Programs, Rana served as Assistant Provost for Strategic Faculty Initiatives, where she facilitated faculty success, development, and retention programs, faculty cohorts, and campus educational and strategic initiatives. Before joining the Provost’s office, Rana was Assistant Vice Chancellor for Inclusive Excellence and Strategic Initiatives at Mizzou, where she led the Office of Inclusive Excellence and developed initiatives for faculty and graduate student development and success. Prior to joining Mizzou, she served as senior assistant dean for curricular and undergraduate affairs and diversity officer at the Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies, Indiana University Bloomington, where she was also a professor and director of the International Law & Institutions degree program. At Indiana University, Rana developed and strengthened curricular, experiential, and global learning opportunities and partnerships, and worked on school and campus initiatives to enhance student success and retention for faculty and students. She oversaw the admissions, student services, living-learning center and professional and career development teams while advancing recruitment, scholarship, and pipeline initiatives. Rana is also a legal scholar who has published widely in law journals and other media in the areas of international law, multilateral institutions and global governance, and equality. She has been a PI on several major grants including most recently a multinational collaboration under a five-year Australian Research Council Discovery Project grant funding empirical research on reconceiving state engagement with the multilateral legal order. She has taught in the Mizzou Law/University of the Western Cape exchange program in South Africa, at ELTE University Law School in Hungary through the Erasmus exchange program, and was a Visiting Fellow at Australian National University School of Law in 2019 and 2022.
Rana has a broad range of leadership and other experience in academia, legal practice and community organizations. She was a professor at the University of Maryland Law School, where she co-developed the school’s international law clinic, and a visiting professor at the UC Berkeley School of Law. She has also served as Of Counsel at Brooks Pierce LLP, where she helped grow the firm’s international law practice, and as a Social Affairs Officer at the United Nations, where she analyzed international and domestic treaty obligations. Rana’s other legal experience includes serving as a judicial law clerk for the Hon. James R. Browning at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and practicing in the areas of international, corporate and regulatory law at Williams & Connolly LLP in Washington, DC and Quinn Emanuel LLP in San Francisco. She obtained her JD from Columbia Law School, MSc from the London School of Economics, and BA from the University of California, Berkeley. Rana has also served on a number of professional and community boards and actively volunteers in her local communities.
