- Appear in Court: Gain invaluable courtroom experience by presenting arguments, questioning witnesses, and participating in hearings under supervision.
- Interact with Clients: Directly interact with clients, interview witnesses, discuss case strategies, and provide critical support during challenging legal proceedings.
- Be an Advocate: Learn to advocate effectively for clients’ rights and interests, whether working to uphold the law as prosecutors or ensuring fair representation as public defenders.
- Receive Mentorship: Benefit from guidance and mentorship from experienced attorneys, refining both their courtroom skills and ethical judgment.
This immersive program not only equips students with practical legal skills but also instills a deep understanding of the ethical responsibilities inherent in criminal law practice. By participating in our clinic, students are well-prepared to make a significant impact in the criminal legal system upon entering their legal careers.
Defense Section
The Defense Section of our Criminal Practice Clinic is a pivotal opportunity for students to engage in direct representation of persons charged with state crimes in partnership with the Missouri Public Defender System. Under the guidance of experienced assistant public defenders, student attorneys undertake real cases involving misdemeanors, felonies, and probation violations in state court. Beginning in 2025, students will be placed at either the Columbia or Fulton Trial Office, where they will actively contribute to legal strategies, conduct client interviews, and assist in courtroom proceedings. This hands-on experience provides invaluable insights into the challenges and responsibilities of defending individuals within the criminal legal system, preparing students to advocate effectively for their clients’ rights and interests.
Prosecution Section
The Prosecution Section of our Criminal Practice Clinic provides students with a profound experience in criminal law. Under the guidance of seasoned attorneys, students actively participate in prosecuting misdemeanors and felonies in state court. Starting in 2025, students will be placed in the Boone, Callaway, and Randolph County Prosecuting Attorney’s Offices. This immersive partnership allows students to hone practical legal skills and explore the critical role of prosecutorial discretion in balancing justice and community safety. By engaging in real cases, students contribute meaningfully to the pursuit of justice, preparing to become effective advocates committed to serving their communities.
Clinic students must complete the Missouri Criminal Practice skills and become Rule 13 certified prior to joining the Clinic.
